At Pia’s Place, we believe the best way to help women empower themselves with recovery is by working closely with them, educating them on any areas of dis-ease they may be dealing with, changing negative behaviors that may feed that dis-ease, or helping them move beyond traumatic personal experiences.
As such, we offer twenty-five hours of group process work each week in the form of lectures, group process, and experiential activities with an emphasis on holistic approaches to recovery. Eating wellness clients participate in an additional eight hours of group process work each week, with a focus on nutrition and body image. Graduates are eligible to attend our weekly Aftercare Program where they gain support and guidance in utilizing and maintaining their growth in recovery. In addition, all of our clients are referred to appropriate continuing care resources after leaving Pia’s Place. These resources include 12-Step programs, counseling, and/or employment training.

Specialty Groups:
Dual Diagnosis
In order to meet the needs of women dealing with both addictions and psychiatric issues—including but not limited to bi-polar disorder, depression, and attention deficit disorder—Pia’s Place offers specialized groups which meet weekly. These groups address medication, relapse prevention, and symptom management. Within these groups, we utilize 12-Step tools to help women accept and de-stigmatize their illnesses. Women working with these issues also meet regularly with our staff psychiatrist for medication monitoring and assessment.
Recovery Life Skills
In this program, our clients take part in discussions and group activities focused on addressing living skills. These skills may include refusal skills, decision making, self-care, money management, values clarification and personal responsibility, identifying life purpose, and interviewing skills. The goal in this program is for our clients to master these skills and techniques in order to gain and maintain a better quality of life through more effective choices.
Workshops:
During the course of a client’s treatment, we present several workshops. Both the Family of Origin Workshop and The Family Healing Workshop are included in the basic program, however, participation in the other workshops is by recommendation of the Primary Therapist and based upon client need.
Family of Origin
The goal of The Family of Origin Workshop is to provide our clients with an overview of founder Pia Mellody’s model of codependency treatment, familiarizing them with the language and techniques used at Pia’s Place. Throughout this workshop, women participate in experiential work such as psychodrama, family sculpture, gestalt, and ego-state diagrams. Each workshop participant is encouraged to co-create an experience specific to her own needs. Here women begin strengthening connections with other women, identifying core issues, and relating these issues to their addictions.
Family Healing Workshop
This workshop offers improvement in overall long-term client recovery for both clients and individual family members. Here, clients and significant others gather with other families to gain greater understanding of the pathology of the addictive process, its devastating effects upon the entire family unit, and the process necessary for satisfactory recovery.
Through this workshop families learn healthy models of interaction and self-care, all while working towards resolution of past issues and identifying effective paths for creating more fulfilling relationships.
*Mothers Workshop
This workshop is offered specifically to mothers carrying a significant burden of shame and pain due to the impact their addictions have had on their children.
Through psychodrama, family sculpture, and guided imagery women taking this workshop learn to identify multi-generational patterns of negative parenting. Once a woman recognizes these patterns and understands how she has been set up to repeat them, she is better able to become accountable for her own parenting and to move towards self-forgiveness and healthier mothering.
*Spirituality Workshop
Conducted in the peace and beauty of the Prescott National Forest, this workshop is designed to promote spiritual awareness and enhance any recovery process. This workshop is not about religion, but rather encourages women to become inner-directed and empowered, all while reducing the barriers that so often inhibit their spiritual development. Women attending this workshop may use tools such as intuition building and self-trust exercises, as well as guided imagery, and dream and journal work.
*Body Image Workshop
The goal of this workshop is to help women explore the core beliefs that have kept them trapped in a negative body image. Through experiential exercises such as movement, art, and expressive writing, clients learn how to nurture, celebrate, and honor the truth of their bodies.
This workshop is not only for women suffering with an eating disorder, but also for those struggling with negative thoughts and feelings about their body. Through a connection with themselves and other participants, clients make a conscious commitment to change the way they perceive and experience their bodies.
*These workshops are made available as minimum eligible attendance is met.
